
Cattle Veterinarian & Ranch Manager
Bottomley Farms is seeking an experienced and dedicated Large Cattle Farm Veterinarian to oversee the complete veterinary care and herd health program for our cattle operation. The veterinarian will be responsible for preventive medicine, disease diagnosis and treatment, reproductive management, biosecurity, animal welfare, herd productivity, and veterinary compliance across the farm.
The successful candidate will work closely with farm management, livestock supervisors, nutritionists, breeding personnel, and animal-care staff to maintain a healthy, productive, and welfare-focused cattle herd.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive herd health program.
• Conduct routine health examinations, treatments, vaccinations, and disease-prevention procedures.
• Diagnose and treat illness, injury, infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, and production-related conditions.
• Provide emergency veterinary care and respond promptly to urgent cases.
• Manage preventive vaccination, parasite-control, deworming, and medication programs.
• Oversee calving, newborn-calf care, colostrum management, and neonatal disease prevention.
• Support reproductive health programs, including fertility evaluations, pregnancy diagnosis, breeding soundness, and reproductive troubleshooting.
• Monitor and manage diseases affecting dairy or beef cattle, including mastitis, lameness, respiratory disease, digestive disorders, and reproductive problems.
• Establish protocols for sick-animal identification, treatment, isolation, recovery,
and humane euthanasia when necessary.
• Conduct regular herd inspections and review mortality, morbidity, treatment,
fertility, growth, and production records.
• Advise on animal nutrition, body condition, housing, hygiene, handling facilities, and
environmental management.
• Develop and enforce farm biosecurity and disease-surveillance procedures.
• Ensure responsible use of antibiotics, vaccines, pharmaceuticals, and other
veterinary products.
• Maintain accurate medical records and ensure compliance with withdrawal periods
and food-safety requirements.
• Train and supervise farm personnel in animal handling, first aid, disease
recognition, medication administration, and welfare standards.
• Investigate disease outbreaks and coordinate laboratory testing, reporting, and
control measures.
• Work with regulatory authorities, diagnostic laboratories, livestock specialists, and
external consultants as required.
• Participate in herd-health planning, farm audits, and continuous improvement
initiatives.
• Promote high standards of animal welfare throughout all stages of production.
Required Qualifications
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Veterinary Medical Degree, or equivalent
qualification.
• Current license to practice veterinary medicine in the relevant jurisdiction.
• Experience working with cattle, preferably in a large commercial dairy, beef, or
mixed cattle operation.
• Strong knowledge of bovine medicine, surgery, reproduction, herd health, and
production systems.
• Ability to diagnose and treat cattle effectively in a fast-paced farm environment.
• Knowledge of veterinary pharmacology, antimicrobial stewardship, vaccination, and disease-control practices.
• Excellent record-keeping, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and make sound clinical decisions.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs when required.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel across the farm and related facilities.
