PURPOSE: The purpose of the Farm Maintenance Worker is to support the maintenance of the Gibbins
Road Farm and agency owned properties. This is an on-call casual position that works primarily in the
community with minimal local travel required.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Depending on experience, the position starts at $24.44-$25.90 per
hour ($44,478.34 - 47,141.06 annually).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support Maintenance of the Gibbins Road Farm:
• Use heavy machinery such as tractors, lawn mowers and electrical hand tools.
• Following proper procedures and safety guidelines when using machinery and power tools
• Complete minor farm duties, such as fixing fences, ensuring outdoor buildings are maintained to
ensure safety of staff and animals gardening, weed removal, lawn care, watering and debris
removal from the grounds.
• Purchase and pick up supplies and products as needed
• Report any home or farm repairs to the Maintenance Program Coordinator
• Support in day-to-day care of livestock
• Ensure vehicles and equipment are fueled and safety standards are met
• Shovels, removes or sweeps ice, snow, leaves and other debris from sidewalks, roads, parking lots,
ditches, culverts and other areas
• Cleans and maintains flower beds and native plant garden by weeding, watering, pruning, applying
fertilizer, mulch and spreading and turning compost as necessary; removes and ensures landscape
areas are free of weeds and other debris; performs landscaping as required.
Provide Administrative Support to the Farm & Agency:
• Complete and submit daily logs
• Attend department staff meetings
• Prepare and submit Financial Request Forms for supplies
• Other related duties
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (please attach all required documents)
• Grade 12 required
• 2 years of related experience working in landscaping or farm maintenance is required
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License and reliable vehicle
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (C.R.C) with vulnerable sector check
• Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1 considered an asset
• Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (W.H.M.I.S) certificate required (training can
be provided upon hire)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Ability to mow lawns and operate lawn mowing and trimming equipment. • Ability to lift, load and/or move various lawn, garden and other litter and waste materials. • Ability to clean and maintain flower beds and native plant garden. • Ability to use shovels, brooms and other similar hand tools. • Ability to perform basic building maintenance • Ability to understand verbal instructions • Ability to work in all weather and site conditions
• Ability to meet physical demands of farm maintenance duties: standing, walking, bending, lifting up
to 50 lbs and operating equipment
• Knowledge of tools and equipment used in farm maintenance
• Knowledge of safe loading and hand tool use
• Knowledge and understanding of Cowichan Tribes culture, land, traditions and the Hul'q'umi'num'
language or a willingness to learn
• Well-developed communication skills
• Organizational skills
