Food Security & Community Agriculture VISTA
Sustaining Way's AmeriCorps VISTA project will build organizational and community capacity to strengthen sustainable anti-poverty programs serving Nicholtown, New Washington Heights, and other approved low-income communities served by Sustaining Way. The Food Security and Community Agriculture Systems VISTA will advance this goal by institutionalizing resident-informed garden and food-access systems, resident leadership, partner and volunteer structures, program-specific education and replication tools, measurement practices, and funding and communications inputs. These systems will reduce barriers to healthy food, strengthen resident capacity to grow and access food, and enable staff, residents, partners, and trained volunteers to sustain and adapt the work after the member's service.
Member Duties : Validate Sustaining Way's current food-security and community-agriculture work and establish a sponsor-approved operating roadmap that identifies priorities, boundaries, responsibilities, measures, seasonal milestones, and sustainable owners for the service term. Establish and test a documented operating system for Backyard Gardens and sponsor-designated community gardens to strengthen participant continuity, resident leadership, partner coordination, and the effective use of trained volunteers. By the end of the service term, transfer the adopted system to designated owners.
