Position Description

Position Title: Greenhouse Assistant

Organizational Classification: Group I - Hourly

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Ministry: Ecological Services

Reports to: Manager, Greenhouse

Job Summary: The Greenhouse Assistant will help with planting and harvesting organic produce, creating organic soil inputs, chicken/egg management, and maintaining surrounding grounds.
  • Provide quality greenhouse work as assigned for The Center at Donaldson. Works to create a visually pleasing greenhouse environment in keeping with both the other landscaped areas at the Center and the mission of taking care for the earth.
  • Prepping and maintaining growing beds for vegetable production
  • Seed trays and re-pot plants to the requested specifications
  • Assists in harvesting, cleaning and delivering produce according to the direction of the greenhouse manager
  • Use garden hand tools and small power equipment to complete required tasks and maintain order to meet our quality standard
  • Moving chickens, collecting and washing eggs
  • Responsible for emptying and washing kitchen scrap buckets to be clean and ready for reuse
  • Make soil amendments like compost, by combining raw ingredients in designed locations and shifting the end product
  • Preparing wood for conversion into biochar and preparing biochar for crushing and use
  • Mowing and string trimming grounds at greenhouses as requested to meet quality standards
  • Respects all elements involved in the job of greenhouse assistant: soil, water, plants, animals and people who work in or visit
  • Communicates hospitably with all; this may include sisters, college professors and students, co-workers, volunteers, visitors etc.
  • Perform tasks with other co-workers, volunteers or college interns in a harmonious way
  • Report immediately any issues that may arise related to the work assigned
  • Treats the tools of the job, that is, equipment and machinery, with care, keeping them in good working order, as would a responsible steward
  • Assure the established quality expectations are achieved.
  • Dispose of all recyclable material to responsibly protect our environment.
  • Inform supervisor when supplies are low to ensure that the proper inventory is in stock at all times

SPECIFICATIONS

Prior Education and Training:
  • High School diploma required.
  • Experience in gardening and grounds related activities preferred.

Experience and Knowledge:
  • Familiarity with hand tools.
  • Experience with equipment used such as tiller, mowers, string trimmers, small tractor, motors, etc.

On-the-Job Training/Orientation Required:
  • Completion of new co-worker orientation.

Other position requirements:
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, push, pull and dig
  • Must be able to adapt to a work schedule that may occasionally require irregular hours or weekends
  • Must be able to use sound judgment during the performance of duties so as to avoid damage to equipment or injury to persons.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

8am-4:30pm
40 hours
