Flexible Opportunity to Build Equity in a Profitable Organic Dairy Grazing Operation

Share-Milking Opportunity

An organic dairy farm is looking for a capable dairy grazier who is eager to succeed and wants to build equity in a profitable organic dairy herd. The farm is located in Western NY about 10 miles from Lake Erie and sits at an elevation of 1600’. It has 300 acres of rolling high organic matter silt loam pastures, with another 200 acres rented. The farm owner is approaching retirement age and wants to make sure that this farm continues as a successful dairy grazing operation long into the future. He would like to develop a share-milking agreement with the right candidate.

This farm has an adequate milking parlor and free-stall barn and a full complement of hay-making equipment. The previous milking herd was sold in 2025, but 60 heifers will be calving in late 2026 and 2027. There is the opportunity for the right candidate to bring their herd to the farm, but that is not necessary. The farm has the potential to milk 200 or more cows and has a secure market with premium price for its organic milk. This would be an amazing opportunity for the right candidate.

Profile of Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate must have experience managing a dairy herd, including grazing. An ideal candidate would also have the following:

  • Willingness to work long hours, when necessary.
  • Ability to work well with others and manage staff as needed.
  • Experience in animal health and parlor management.
  • Knowledge of organic standards is helpful, but not necessary.
  • Goal oriented and business minded.
  • Capable of maintaining records and following protocols.
  • Comfortable operating machinery.
  • Fencing, light construction, and milking equipment maintenance skills would be useful.

If interested, please send a resume with a cover letter describing your experience in the dairy industry and why you are interested in the opportunity to Ashley Hughes at Ashley@dga-national.org by 11/25.
