Beltsville Construction Supply is hiring an experienced Small Engine Mechanic to join our service department in Beltsville, Maryland. For decades, we have served customers throughout the Beltsville area with outdoor power equipment, lawn and garden tools, construction equipment, parts, rentals, and dependable repair services.

In this hands-on mechanic position, you’ll diagnose, repair, and maintain equipment such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, blowers, generators, pumps, and compact construction equipment. You’ll work with leading brands including Stihl, Husqvarna, Toro, Honda, Briggs & Stratton, Kawasaki, and Kohler.

The ideal candidate has at least two years of professional small engine repair experience and is comfortable completing mechanical and electrical diagnostics, troubleshooting equipment independently, and communicating repair recommendations to customers. What You’ll Do

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a wide variety of small engines, outdoor power equipment, and construction equipment
  • Perform mechanical and electrical diagnostics and repairs
  • Service equipment from brands such as Briggs & Stratton, Honda, Kawasaki, Kohler, Husqvarna, Stihl, Toro, and others
  • Inspect equipment to identify mechanical issues, wear, and required maintenance
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and prepare rental equipment for service and customer use
  • Read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, parts diagrams, and technical information
  • Use diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and specialty equipment safely and effectively
  • Identify parts and verify availability and pricing using parts catalogs and computer systems
  • Create new part numbers when necessary
  • Prepare accurate parts and repair estimates for customer approval
  • Communicate with customers regarding repair recommendations, estimates, approvals, and equipment completion
  • Accurately document labor hours, parts used, diagnostics, repairs, and other work performed
  • Complete work orders and required documentation accurately and in a timely manner
  • Maintain an organized inventory of parts, tools, and equipment
  • Keep the service area clean, organized, and safe
  • Participate in manufacturer training to stay current with new equipment, technology, and repair procedures
  • Follow all company safety policies, manufacturer procedures, and applicable regulations
  • Assist with other service department responsibilities as needed

What We’re Looking For

  • 2+ years of professional experience diagnosing and repairing small engines and/or outdoor power equipment
  • Strong knowledge of gasoline engines, fuel systems, ignition systems, carburetion, electrical systems, and mechanical components
  • Experience servicing small engines, chainsaws, trimmers, blowers, mowers, generators, pumps, and/or construction equipment
  • Ability to independently diagnose problems and determine the appropriate repair
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, parts diagrams, and technical service information
  • Comfortable using diagnostic tools and computerized parts and service systems
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Ability to accurately document repairs, parts, and labor
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple repair jobs efficiently
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required; forklift certification is a plus

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move equipment and parts weighing up to 75 lbs
  • Ability to safely operate service vehicles, shop equipment, and other equipment required for the position
  • Driving record that meets company insurance requirements
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical and obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, if required
