Position Summary
This position performs high-level engineering work and is responsible for making decisions independent of supervisory oversight. This position assists with directing the work and activities of transportation specialist and consultants while providing technical guidance to the design, construction, maintenance, and consultant staff on geotechnical/soils design as well as evaluation of soil conditions. This position is responsible for providing assistance to the team with project activities, performing soils-related activities during both design and construction, completing soils reports for highway improvement projects, evaluation and accepting consultant prepared soils reports, providing assistance on pavement designs, and coordinating all materials activities for the Southwest Region Madison office during construction from Letting through the finals process.
This position requires strong knowledge and understanding of applicable WisDOT and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) rules, laws, statutes, procedures, and policies as well as an understanding of Southwest Region construction programs, contract plans, estimates and specifications processes and procedures.
The full performance level of this position is Civil Engineering Transportation Advanced which will require a valid Wisconsin Professional Engineering License.
Salary Information
The Senior level position is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $84,656 - $104,458 depending upon qualifications and experience.
The Advanced level position is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $92,768 - $114,483 depending on qualifications and experience. The Advanced level also receives up to an additional $2,080/year for having your Professional Engineering license.
A $3,000 sign-on bonus applies to those who do not have any prior permanent full-time state service in the last five years and agree to remain in the position for one year. The $3,000 will be paid on the first paycheck.
WisDOT also offers excellent benefits. A twelve-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

- Upon hire, candidate must have graduated from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) ABET accredited college or university with a 4-year bachelor's degree (or Master's or PH.D.) in engineering OR have graduated from an Engineer Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) accredited college AND hold an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification OR possess a PE license (registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin OR a valid Professional Engineering registration and be able to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state).
- At least 4 years of professional engineering experience in design, construction, or maintenance of transportation structures after receiving their degree from an ABET accredited University.
Additionally, a qualified Advanced candidate will have the above experience as well as:
- A valid Professional Engineering registration and be able to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state.
