Swine Farm Technician

Cross Roads Sow, LLC is a family-owned commercial sow farm in Columbia Cross Roads, Pennsylvania, dedicated to sustainable pork production and becoming a reliable source of healthy TN-70 commercial pigs. Founded in 2025 and managed in partnership with Northern Ag Solutions, the farm is renovating and upgrading its animal housing and equipment to support 6,000 sows and 1,500 gilts.

As Cross Roads Sow prepares to welcome its first piglets following repopulation by the end of 2026, we are building a team of approximately 18 dedicated employees to help bring the operation to life. We are hiring a full-time Swine Farm Technician to provide hands-on care for sows, gilts, boars, and piglets across breeding, gestation, farrowing, gilt development, and general animal health.

Working hours may occasionally be longer or shorter depending on workload, animal-care needs, and assigned responsibilities. Team members may also participate in rotating livestock-trailer washing and four-hour nighttime farrowing coverage.

Responsibilities

• Monitor the health, condition, feed and water intake, and thermal environment of sows, gilts, boars, and piglets.
• Provide daily animal care in accordance with approved standard operating procedures and animal-welfare standards.
• Maintain accurate production and animal-health records and submit information to supervisors on time.
• Safely move sows, boars, and piglets as directed.
• Identify animals requiring additional care and provide appropriate treatment according to established protocols.
• Maintain clean and safe barn conditions through pressure washing, routine upkeep, and proper use of safety equipment.
• Perform routine maintenance tasks as needed.
• Follow Northern Ag Solutions biosecurity protocols.
• Assist teammates and other farm departments as production needs require.

Breeding and Gestation Responsibilities

• Assist with heat checking, artificial insemination, animal movement, pen organization, tagging, vaccinations, and pregnancy monitoring.
• Conduct health assessments for boars, gilts, sows, hospitalized animals, and other livestock.
• Monitor feed intake and complete body-condition scoring.
• Maintain barn cleanliness according to established power-washing procedures.
• Assist the Farrowing Department when needed.

Farrowing and Piglet-Care Responsibilities

• Carefully monitor and support sows and gilts throughout the farrowing process.
• Record births and deaths daily and maintain accurate sow cards.
• Complete litter processing, including castration, iron shots, tail docking, and vaccinations according to established protocols.
• Medicate sows as needed under predetermined treatment protocols.
• Assist with weaning procedures, including litter identification, vaccination, sexing, counting, and organizing wean-day activities.
• Prepare piglets for efficient truck loading.
• Complete farrowing-room washing and turnover procedures.
• Assist the Breeding and Gestation Department when needed.

Gilt-Development Responsibilities

• Collect production data and maintain records within the farm’s genetic programming system.
• Organize and identify litters.
• Assist with gilt selection and ear tagging.
• Support the management of replacement stock from the nursery through finishing and entry into the gestation department.

Compensation and Benefits

• $49,252 annual base salary
• Relocation travel reimbursement (Approved applicable fees)
