Job Description
Under the supervision of the Farm Manager for the School of Agriculture, the Agricultural Aides will perform routine trades work to support the UVI Agricultural Research, Teaching, and Extension Center (UVI-ARTEC) Farm, the AES research plots, Longford Farm, and the USDA research fields. The individual will assist in general maintenance and development of the 60-acre ARTEC Farm, including mowing pastures, weed whacking, fence clearing, repair and maintenance, installing new fencing and livestock pens, and moving livestock daily.
Additional Duties
Additional duties include maintaining the areas around the water catchments and pond, assisting with plumbing repairs for all regions (USDA, AES, ARTEC, and Longford), assisting the Farm Manager and Trades Department with farm machinery operation, and maintaining SOA vehicles and heavy equipment, including pressure washing heavy equipment and washing SOA vehicles. Maintenance and repairs of infrastructure (fences, water lines, greenhouses, storage sheds, tools, equipment, and vehicles) are also included. Tools and equipment are also secured in locked storage areas.
The Agricultural Aides will also work with the Farm Manager and Trades Department to manage an inventory of tools, supplies, and hardware to be used in the work. They will also assist as needed with any projects required by the Trades Department and the Farm Manager.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, along with knowledge of agriculture, farming, gardening, landscape maintenance, and related fields, as well as small engine operation and repair. A valid driver's license is required. Responsibilities include operating vehicles and farm equipment. Essential skills: driving vehicles and tractors, operating small power equipment, maintaining an inventory of parts and supplies, working effectively as part of a team or independently, and communicating in English (both written and verbal).

While performing the duties of the job, employees will be required to work outdoors in hot weather. This position requires the employee to be able to lift 65 lbs and carry it at least 25 yards. Work environment: The noise level in the work environment will probably be moderate. The work environment is a mix of outdoors and indoors.
