Head Gardener & Estate Grounds Manager
Caroline County, Virginia
Rose Hill is a historic Virginia estate encompassing more than 300 acres, including formal gardens, specimen trees, woodlands, meadows, and agricultural land. We are seeking a talented, hands-on, full-time Garden & Grounds Manager to oversee the care, development, and long-term stewardship of this remarkable property.
The ideal candidate is passionate about horticulture, highly organized, and experienced in managing diverse landscapes in USDA Zone 7b.
Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain formal gardens, perennial borders, and ornamental plantings.
- Oversee the health and care of mature trees, shrubs, and lawns
- Monitor irrigation systems, soil health, and integrated pest management practices.
- Coordinate and supervise outside contractors and specialty vendors as needed.
- Maintain garden equipment and oversee horticultural supplies.
- Assist with preservation and enhancement of the estate’s historic landscape character.
- Work closely with ownership to implement long-term garden and grounds objectives.
Qualifications
- Experience in horticulture, estate gardening, public gardens, arboreta, or similar environments.
- Strong knowledge of perennials, annuals, trees, shrubs, and landscape maintenance in Zone 7b.
- Experience with pruning, plant identification, soil management, and sustainable horticultural practices.
- Ability to operate landscape equipment and perform physical outdoor work.
- Self-motivated with excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Degree or certification in horticulture, landscape management, arboriculture, or related field preferred.
