Job Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision from the chief horticulturist, plan, monitor & supervise a horticulture program for inmates at your assigned location and other sites (if applicable).
  • Perform duties relating to the function of horticulture/grounds maintenance activities working with Inmates to support a horticulture/grounds maintenance program & other horticulture special projects as assigned.
  • Provide supervision & instruction to inmate participants/assigned staff for the care of complex grounds concerning landscape installation, maintenance, vegetable gardening & seasonal color.
  • Maintain equipment.
  • Responsible for inventory of chemicals, accountable for tools/equipment.
  • Responsible for the security of the work area.
  • Establish and maintain a greenhouse.
  • Assist with special event support.
  • Must obtain SC applicator's pesticide license within first year of employment.

Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and custodial, groundskeeping or maintenance experience directly related to the area of employment.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
  • A high school diploma and custodial, groundskeeping or maintenance experience directly related to the area of employment

OR
  • A horticulture degree focusing on the science and art of growing and managing plants.
  • Must possess or obtain a SC applicator's pesticide license within first year of employment.
