Posting Details

The Meat and Poultry Inspection Division of the New Mexico Livestock Board was established to ensure safe and wholesome meat products for the consumers of New Mexico through inspection and outreach. Our program is at least equal to the Federal Inspection program and strives to maintain viability and accountability for all our states meat processing facilities that fall under our jurisdiction.

This position will be located in the Southern part of the state.

Why does the job exist?

The supervisor position exists as a liaison between the Senior Manager of the program and the inspectors (in-plant personnel) at the establishments. The supervisors will report to the upper management. This position is for the in-field supervision of the in-plant inspection personnel.

How does it get done?

Oversee and supervise NMLB in-plant inspectors.
Create schedules for the in-plant inspection to ensure all duties are covered.
Fill in for in-plant personnel when needed for coverage.
Investigate any violations of the Meat and Poultry Inspection Act, Poultry Products Inspection Act, Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, or any of the New Mexico Statutes and NMAC.
Document any violations found and report to upper management.
Conduct surveillance of firms and individuals for compliance.
Do timely visits to the custom exempt plants for their review.
Prepare daily, weekly and monthly report for the upper management.
Conduct Food Safety Assessments in inspected establishments as needed.

Who are the customers?

State of New Mexico livestock producers and meat & poultry consumers.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this position will have knowledge and/or experience of the meat or food industry and the importance of regulation. A degree in a related science would be preferred. The ability to travel in various weather conditions as well as learn and adapt quickly is a must. There will be some plant interaction so the ability to deal with plant conditions (cold, hot, bloody, messy animal slaughter and fabrication, etc.) is warranted. Candidate will possess goo customer relation skills.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, agriculture, microbiology, meat science, animal science, health care, criminal justice, information technology, or public sanitation from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience preferably in Federal or State meat regulations and procedures. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Food safety training in HACCP and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid NM Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire.

Working Conditions

Extensive travel throughout the state as well as potential traveling to various training and conferences countrywide.
Working conditions found in meat slaughter/fabrication plants and establishments (cold, hot, bloody, messy animal slaughter and fabrication, etc.)
A fair amount of computer time and phone communication due to traveling and it being a remote p-7357osition.
