Cattle Property Caretaker, WALCHA NSW

PublishedPublished: Published 4 days ago
Livestock / Animal Production
18th July, 2026

Looking for a quieter pace of life where your practical skills are genuinely valued? This live-on caretaker position, located east of Walcha, offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a peaceful rural lifestyle while helping care for a well-managed cattle property.
  • Live in a comfortable two-bedroom cottage on a picturesque cattle property.
  • Enjoy a varied role combining property maintenance with seasonal cattle work.
  • Negotiable remuneration, fuel for weekly town trips and a genuine work-life balance with lighter daily workloads.
A well-established family-owned cattle enterprise in the Yarrowitch district and approximately one hour east of Walcha, is seeking a reliable Caretaker to become the full-time on-property presence. Running around 1,000 breeders and followers, the operation is well organised with an experienced manager living locally and overseeing the property, while the owners reside off-site. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys peace and quiet, values independence and takes pride in maintaining a property to a high standard. The successful applicant will report directly to the Property Manager, supporting existing systems while providing an important set of "eyes and ears" on the property.

The New England High Country offers spectacular scenery, reliable rainfall, cool winters and a relaxed country lifestyle. While the property is fairly isolated, Walcha provides essential services, cafés, shopping, sporting facilities and a welcoming rural community. This position would best suit a mature single person or couple seeking a long-term rural lifestyle rather than regular access to town. The role is expected to commence no later than September 2026.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:
  • Carry out general property maintenance including fencing, repairs, mowing, hedge maintenance, chainsaw work and keeping the property well presented.
  • Assist with seasonal cattle processing including calf marking, weaning, yard work and general livestock handling.
  • Undertake weed control using herbicides with a four wheeler or side-by-side, along with general paddock maintenance.
  • Maintain a consistent on-property presence, monitor the property and communicate any issues promptly to the Property Manager.
Selection Criteria:
  • Practical, proactive and able to work independently with strong maintenance and repair skills.
  • Previous cattle handling experience and happy to support, rather than manage, the livestock operation.
  • Honest, dependable and willing to work within well-established systems and procedures.
  • Mechanical ability highly regarded. Chemical Certificate is required (or willingness to obtain one).
Additional Particulars:
  • Comfortable two-bedroom cottage provided with power, fireplace & garage. Fuel supplied for one weekly trip to town.
  • Negotiable remuneration based on experience, practical ability and mechanical skills.
  • Permanent live-on position suited to a single person or couple.
  • Applications will be considered as they are received.
  • Please note that our client does not offer visa sponsorship for this position and are unable to accept applications from candidates currently on a Working Holiday visa in Australia.
